Occupational Overview
Administrative Assistants are employed by every size and type of public
and private business organization. The programs are designed to provide
students with strong computer software, keyboarding, and communication
skills.
Administrative Assistants perform a full range of office tasks which may
include word processing, spreadsheet manipulation, written and oral communication
tasks, travel and meeting arrangements, records management, mail distribution,
telephone usage, website maintenance, project management, and desktop
publishing.
Career Opportunities
General office work, keying, receptionist, and recordkeeping are the most
common types of jobs for the administrative support graduate. The greatest
number of entry-level jobs are in the metro area.
About the Program
The administrative support programs are designed to provide students with
strong keyboarding skills while specializing as an office assistant or
admistrative assistant. Students may begin their coursework fall or spring
semester.
Helpful Background
Prospective students should have an interest in business. Office workers
need strong computer skills and should demonstrate proficiency in skills
such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary.
Students must like to work with people and recognize the importance of
details and accuracy. Manual dexterity, ability to handle pressure, and
good time management skills are excellent attributes.
Tools of the Trade
Administrative support personnel are responsible for establishing an efficient
office through computer-based record keeping and paperwork. A calculator,
computer, transcribing machine, copier, and fax machine may be used on
a daily basis.
