Educational Assistant

Educational Assistants work with children in day care centers, preschools, elementary and high schools, and with children or adults special needs.

Occupational Overview
The Educational Assistant program on the Hutchinson campus of Ridgewater College offers the opportunity for people to pursue careers as paraprofessionals or assistants in education, training, and related services. Employment opportunities for graduates include the following: live-in child care, day care facilities, pre-schools, public and private schools (K-12), special needs programs, residential facilities, adult training facilities, state agencies, and social services.

Career Opportunities
Working with people is among the fastest-growing and most-exciting professions in the field of service related occupations. Educational Assistants work with children in day care centers, preschools, elementary and high schools, and children or adults with special needs. The curriculum deals with special needs, early childhood and elementary education.

 

About the Program
The Educational Assistant program is Minnesota's original and most successful post-secondary training program for paraprofessionals in education, training, and related services. The competency-based option is the only program that trains specifically for paraprofessionals who provide instructional support for persons with differing abilities- pre-school through adult. This program will provide the student with the skills to work in an educational setting by studying methods and designing materials needed in the learning process for the learner. Students in the Educational Assistant program learn through lecture, observation, lab experiences and up to 12 credits of internship.

Helpful Background
Students may find the following courses helpful, but not required: life studies and nutrition, child development, health occupations, human relations, communications and art. They should enjoy working with people.
