Advanced Planning

The possibility of a power failure is ever present and a situation that can be easily handled calmly. The most important thing to do is to think safety!

  1. Employees should consult with their supervisor before leaving the area whenever possible.
  2. Please comply with directions from emergency services workers, such as: safety staff, facilities management staff and administrators.
  3. Do not use candles for illumination; these are fire hazards. Use battery flashlights and lamps instead.
  4. Turn off any equipment that was still in service (except IT equipment that is operating on its own uninterruptible power supply) in order to avoid power surges when service is restored.
  5. Leave a task light turned on so that you can determine when service is restored.
  6. Exercise caution with valuables.
  7. Limit movement between floors of a building. If necessary, use the stairs until power is restored.
