Tribune gives play good reviews: Three angels, who were somewhat less than angelic, brought bliss, security, happiness and a Christmas dinner to an imaginary family on the Willmar Community College stage last night; and enjoyment, laughter, and a well-worth-it satisfaction to the customers.

"My Three Angels" is a happy success to kick off the 1964 theatre year at the college. Written by Sam and Bella Spewack, and directed by Dave Dorsey, the story involves a storekeeper's family in French Guinea which is "adopted" by three "guardian angels." The "angels" are actually convicts supposedly fixing the roof, but who fix up the daughters love life, straighten out the father's ledgers, and see to it that they all live happily ever after. It is only incidental that in the course of such happy procedure "Adolph" sees to it that there is a demise or two.

The largest musical theater production in W.S.J.C.'s history, "South Pacific," written by Rogers and Hammerstein, was presented to overflowing audiences May 10, 11, and 12. The play takes place on two islands of the South Pacific during W.W.II. It was directed by David Dorsey and Ivan Dusek provided technical assistance. Members of the cast were selected from both the college and community, with the college-community orchestra providing the musical background under the direction of Mr. Chet Sommers.

A Navy nurse, Nellie Forbush, played by Dee Anna Dorsey, and a French planter, Emile de Becque, played by Linton Lehrer, were the lead performers, adding the professional touch. Playing the major comedy roles were Carl Sorenson as Luther Billis, a Seabee, and Rosalin Peterson, playing Bloody Mary, who made a living by trading with the Navy.

Solos by Chuck Callow, as Lt. Cable, Bloody Mary, Nellie, and Emile added credit to the performance. Perhaps one of the most lively scenes was the "Honeybun" scene where Nellie and Billis sang and danced to the delight of the audience. Some of the remarks about the performance were "tremendous," "professional," and "enjoyable." There were standing ovations for all three performances.

Information:

This, the thirteenth Broadway show of Neil Simon's, is perhaps a slight change from his previous shows. His humor, while just as compelling as ever, is of a slightly gentler nature. This play had its start when Simon by chance picked up a volume of Chekhov's short stories and read, "The Sneeze." He thought it would make a delightful little play, but it would be so short! He proceeded to dramatize a selection of Chekhov's short stories - and then narrowed them to an effective evening of theatre.

Anton Chekhov, the "writer" who tells his stories was a practicing physician most of his adult life. One of his biographers called him "The Good Doctor," so that seemed the right title for a play drawn from the works of the Russian doctor who himself reached immortality with "The Three Sisters" and other turn-of-the-century masterpieces and only incidentally also wrote 800 short stories.

Neil Simon, since early childhood, also has had the nickname of "Doc" and since there is a great deal of both writers in evidence in the final result, the title of the play aptly identifies both authors.

"The Good Doctor" was presented December 6, 7, and 8 at the Willmar Community College Theatre.

Information:

Shakespeare delighted in comedies of mistaken identity. The theme of a girl disguised as a boy appears in plays such as "As You Like It" and "Twelfth Night." Our authors have borrowed freely in plot and characters from the latter. Sebastian and Viola - brother and sister with an uncanny resemblance, are separated in a shipwreck and surface in "Illyria", which bears a strong resemblance to New York. Oh yes, it is 1968 and they are both rock singers. Shakespeare's Orsino has become Orson, the manager of a rock-group in search of a singer (one of his has been drafted) and in love with Olivia, the owner of a discotheque. Viola and Sebastian both are hired for the job. (Everyone thinks they are one and the same.) Olivia falls in love with Sebastian and Orson with Viola - and there is no end of confusion. The music is that of the early (pre-Hair) rock-musical, reflecting the spirit and search for identity of the youth of the late sixties, rebellious yet capable of tenderness and love.

The Order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken was founded in the seventh century by Saint Wilfred, a bishop of England. He established the first convent and school known as the Wilfrid Academy. His motto was "We don't teach beauty - we radiate it!" Many years later a small group of pioneering sisters set out for America to establish a motherhouse in Cleveland. But they got off the plane in Newark by mistake. Th order was "found" by the Newark Airport Police and the new motherhouse was established in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was at that time that the Order of St. Wilfrid elected to change the name to the Little Sisters of Hoboken and they have been affectionately known as the "Little Hobos" ever since. It was from this convent that Sister Mary Regina, Sister Mary Hubert and Sister Robert Anne, set sail for the Mediterranean to establish their leper colony. Today the order has nuns doing various good works in the Diocese of Newark. They also operate Mount Saint Helen's School in Hoboken.

"Man of La Mancha" was first produced on Broadway in 1966. It is loosely based on the life and writings of Miguel De Cervantes, author of "The Adventures of Don Quixote." Much of what Cervantes wrote challenged the beliefs and mores of his time. His mad knight of La Mancha became a vehicle for causing people to question. These questions greatly distrubed the powerful Spanish Inquisition, the most feared judicial body of its time. Eventually Cervantes was imprisioned and summoned before The Inquisition to answer for his writings. "Man of La Mancha" begins with this incident in the life of Miguel De Cervantes.

Dames at Sea is the last production presented under the banner of Willmar Community College Theatre.  On this eve of transition to the new, consolidated Ridgewater College Theatre it seems appropriate to reflect on the past thirty-some years.  To attempt a history in this short a space seems doomed to failure, so these comments shall reflect memories, mental snapshots from a history of plays, musicals, directing, acting, design, lighting, choreography, musical direction, and teaching.  When the newly created college opened its doors in the early sixties, David Dorsey was at the helm of the Theatre.  Memorable productions from this early time included Dial M for Murder, which opened, as ill fortune would have it, within days of the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and a folk-opera, Down in the Valley in collaboration with Chet Sommers and the Music Department.  When the young college split into two schools with the birth of the Minnesota State Jr. College system, the theatre, now part of the Junior College remained open to participation of students of the Technical Institute as well as interested community members.  It has remained so to this day.  The theatre at WCC has enjoyed true cooperation with other theatres, like the Barn Theatre, and shared the talents of not only students of both institutions, but truly of the entire community.  In the late sixties the faculty expanded with the addition of Ivan Dusek.  The theatre was still located in one of the buildings of the old radar base, which then housed the campus.  Non-musical productions were presented there, among them Shaw’s Arms and the Man and Brecht’s Mother Courage as well as Mary Chase’s Harvey, while musical productions like South Pacific in 1967 (directed by Dave Dorsey and featuring DeeAnna Dorsey and faculty member Linton Lehrer), DamnYankees, and Li’l Abner (which had an entire cast in dog-patch costumes chasing an escaped pig across the parking lot) were moved to the city auditorium or the central office building.  In 1971, the theatre was to move into its new building on the current campus.  The old location had been rebuilt to house a carpentry shop and the new theatre was nowhere near completion.  The Barn Theatre graciously offered its facility and WCC’s production of Dark of the Moon moved to the old, unheated Barn Theatre.  An unusually warm fall weather held until opening day, when temperatures dropped to the lower 30s.  Enthusiastic audiences watched the play, wrapped in blankets hastily borrowed from the Regional Treatment Center and sipping hot coffee served by ushers.  The actors’ breath was visible throughout the play!  But the new theatre was completed and has seen a long list of successful productions of plays like, among others, Of Mice and Men, Spoon River Anthology, God’s Favorite, Blithe Spirit, The Physicists, Taking Steps, Oh Dad, Poor Dad..., Chapter Two, Play it Again Sam, Bus Stop, Butterflies are Free, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Cat’s Paw, The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, Little Footsteps, Whose Life is it Anyway, 6 Rms Riv Vu, Veronica’s Room, musicals like Once Upon a Mattress, Oliver, which featured a cast of nearly sixty, one of them Marie Staley who appears in tonight’s musical, Robber Bridegroom, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Apple Tree, Fantasticks, Your Own Thing, which featured Shakespeare to a rock rhythm, Cotton Patch Gospel, a musical version of the gospel of Matthew, They’re Playing Our Song, Little Shop of Horrors, Nunsense I and II, and Man of La Mancha, even an opera - The Marriage of Figaro in 1975.  The faculty has increased over the years with the addition of Doug Stewart, Tom Wiborg and Keith Green in theatre, Jane Kochis and Darcy Lease in Music.  Dave Dorsey and Chet Sommers have since retired - their talents are missed.  WCC Theatre has done well thanks to the combined talents of faculty, students and dedicated members of the Willmar Community who have supported the theatre over the years.  There are simply too many to name here, so let this be an expression of our heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed over the years, actors, designers, singers, musicians.  A round of applause to all!

We are at the beginning of a new era.  We are looking forward to many exciting and vital seasons at the new Ridgewater College Theatre.
